Earth Repair: The Kinds of Growth We Need

The next economy is about meeting daily life needs in ways that enhance, rather than degrade, social and ecological assets. This “leave things better” approach involves ecosystem restoration - and not just in the countryside; the relationships between cities - and the resources that feed them - is central. New urban-rural relationships are part of this metabolic re-connection. So, too, is focus on systems thinking in design and learning in new ways, with new people, and in new places.

John Thackara’s lecture will focus on real-world examples such as social farming and care farming; rural food hubs; green infrastructure; civic ecology and more.

John Thackara travels the world in search of practical projects that restore the planet and realize a sustainable future. He writes about these stories at his blog (thackara.com) and in books; John curated the celebrated Doors of Perception conference for 20 years and has led place discovery workshops in 40 countries. He was director of the Netherlands Design Institute, and commissioner of the world’s first social innovation biennial, Dott 07 in England, and of the first ecological city biennial, City Eco Lab in France. John is a Senior Fellow at the Royal College of Art in London, and an advisor on social-ecological innovation to cities, companies, and civil society organizations.

John's lecture will take place Wednesday, April 12th at 5pm in Margaret Morrison Carnegie Hall Room 103.
