C Studio II: Designing Communications for Interactions: Resonating Facts

Tagged as: Communications, Interaction Design, Sophomore, Undergraduate
Improving the energy efficiency of homes has the potential to yield numerous benefits for owners, communities, and the planet. However, taking action to realize such benefits is a public choice rather than a requirement. Initiatives have been launched to increase participation but adoption remains low. Sophomore design students found that they can lend an important hand to the effort. By investigating current obstacles, concerns, and motivations of all parties involved, the students gained valuable insights that aided their communication efforts. Based on their discoveries, students crafted messages that aimed to resonate with homeowners and encourage them to take action, while assisting energy assessors in facilitating conversations with the public. They addressed the challenge by studying communication strategies and structures, developing clear 'stories' that they delivered through visual, verbal, temporal, and physical forms, translating abstract information into concrete diagrams, and inciting interaction through the phrasing and pacing of their messages.
