Of 28 works submitted by School of Design students, 13 were selected for this year’s Context, the AIGA | Pittsburgh’s annual design competition, and three Design students received “Design Excellence Awards.” Three of our faculty members had a total of 16 entries accepted and two Design Excellence awards awarded. And, for the third year running, a Carnegie Mellon Design student took the “Best in Show” award, competing against all designers who had entries in the show.
AIGA | Context show, opening night Annie Jacobson, a senior Communication Design student, won “Best in Show” this year, edging out all competition from students and professionals, for her hard-cover, hand-bound book, Meet the Soviet Leadership, which introduces the eight man group that led the Soviet Union from 1917 to 1991. The book is in the style of an issue of McSweeney's. Excerpt page from Jacobson’s winning book This was the third year in a row that a Carnegie Mellon Design student took the Best in Show award. In 2009, Stephen Lim (BFA, Industrial Design, 2009) won for his entry “Look at Me,” and in 2008, new alums Lee Byron (BFA, Industrial Design, 2008) and Joannie Wu (BFA, Communication Design, 2008) won for their game “Fireflies.” Excerpt page from Jacobson’s winning book Context is a celebration of the designer’s struggles and successes in finding solutions that are effective, meaningful and beautiful. A juried selection of the very best work produced in our region over the past year.
