Beatnik

Lily Fulop

For this project, my partner Adella Guo and I had to create a typeface that embodied the material that we were working with: charcoal. We did a lot of experimentation, and found that charcoal can make a wide variety of marks and is messy to work with. So, our typeface is both heavy, light, smudged, and crisp all at the same time. We decided to name the font after the 1950s/60s beat movement, because both are dark, bold, and unapologetic.
