Tom Merriman teaches Furniture Design and Advanced Digital/Production Prototyping. Both courses  are centered around the process of defining and refining a concept. Students focus on defining it’s form and maintaining design intent as the form evolves in response to external constraints, such as those imposed by material properties, manufacturing processes and structural considerations. The outcome in these classes are real, viable artifacts that function in the real world.

Tom has been affiliated with the School of Design since 1985 and recently retired from a full time Teaching Professor appointment.

His many professional activities include a long-term relationship with New York University working on  research projects studying motor skill development in infants, as well as many furniture commissions in the United States and Europe.

Tom also peruses his passion for environmental activism through his work with Hays Woods in Pittsburgh, PA.
