Molly Wright Steenson on “Architectural Intelligence”

What is the space between architecture and architecting? That is the central question of Molly Wright Steenson’s first book “Architectural Intelligence: How Designers and Architects Created the Digital Landscape.” The book is about the mostly-unexplored history of the relationship between artificial intelligence, cybernetics, architecture, and design.

Thomas Merriman Wins Henry Hornbostel Teaching Award

Thomas Merriman, a Teaching Professor at Carnegie Mellon University's School of Design, just received the Henry Hornbostel Teaching Award this past April. The Hornbostel Award, which is the College of Fine Arts' annual recognition for teaching excellence, is named after Henry Hornbostel, the first Dean of the College of Fine Arts and the architect and designer of several Carnegie Mellon University buildings including the College of Fine Arts Building, Baker Hall, Doherty Hall, Hammerschlag Hall and Margaret Morrison Carnegie Hall.

Design Faculty Wins Award for Supercomputing Resources

The Pittsburgh Supercomputing Center (PSC) has just awarded Carnegie Mellon University's School of Design's Associate Professor Peter Scupelli and Post-Doctoral Researcher Paul Inventado supercomputing resources for their proposal entitled "Creative Workplace Alchemies: Using Computer Vision and Machine Learning to Study Occupancy of Individual Workspaces and Collaboration Hotspots."

Design's Austin Lee at the London Design Biennale

The first iteration of the London Design Biennale opened to the public on September 7 at Somerset House in the UK. Featuring newly commissioned installations by design teams representing 37 countries and territories, the Biennale is a venue for continued conversations about designing for “ideas about sustainability, migration, pollution, energy, cities, and social equality." Austin S. Lee, an assistant professor at the School of Design, participated in the Biennale as the lead coordinator and interaction designer for the Republic of Korea’s design team.
