Alumni Profile: Uriel Eisen

Uriel Eisen is an entrepreneur and designer with a focus on manufacturability. Uriel obtained BDes from Carnegie Mellon University’s School of Design in 2015, and is currently the founder of Austere Manufacturing, a company that specializes in high performance buckles.

Alumna Elizabeth McDonough on Creating in Rural Greece

Elizabeth McDonough, an alumna of Carnegie Mellon University’s School of Design Master of Arts program (MA ‘22), spent a week this summer participating in a creative residency in the southern Peloponeese region of Greece. The residency was put on by the Periplus Project, an organization which aims to enable “the infiltration of design-thinking into all key sectors of society.” By tapping into and innovating around pre-existing potential, and motivating local communities, Periplus’ objective is to encourage individuals to harness creativity as a tool to effect positive, intentional change.

Alumni Profile: Laury A. Egan

Laury A. Egan, an alumna of Carnegie Mellon University's School of Design (BFA '72), has been enjoying an incredible career as an author, with her latest book, "Once, Upon an Island," arriving on shelves in September. Laury not only writes, she also designs the visuals for her books and their covers. From poetry to comedy to suspense, Egan's body of work continues to grow and evolve.

Design Alumna Launches VICE VERSA

Alanna Fusaro, an alumna of Carnegie Mellon University’s School of Design (BFA ’14), recently founded and launched VICE VERSA, a shoe brand specializing in heels that fold into flats. The shoes, which “walk the fine line between engineering and fashion,” were the result of a design process that included trips to factories around the world, CAD modeling, 3D prints and mechanical quality testing with Boeing engineers.

Alumnus Nadeem Haidary on “Rethinking Users”

Nadeem Haidary, an Industrial Design alumnus from Carnegie Mellon University's School of Design (BA '09), recently released "Rethinking Users" from BIS Publishers. "Rethinking Users," designed and illustrated by Haidary, is a book and toolkit written by design researchers Mike Youngblood and Ben Chesluk. It outlines an approach the authors call "user ecosystem thinking."

Alumna Margot Bloomstein is “Trustworthy”

Margot Bloomstein, an alumna of Carnegie Mellon University’s School of Design (BFA ’00) and principal at Appropriate, Inc., will soon be releasing "Trustworthy: How the Smartest Brands Beat Cynicism and Bridge the Trust Gap." The book, published by Page Two Books, looks at the way brands and businesses can find success by embracing the ideas of trust and hope in the face of cynicism.
