The Generative Playground: Designing with Systems, Data, and Emergence: A Fall Design Intensive for a World in Motion

Margaret Morrison Carnegie Hall Room 203

In a creative landscape increasingly shaped by automation, machine learning, data, and rapidly evolving creative tools, designers are being asked to think differently about what design can be, how it comes into being, and what role we play in shaping it. This intensive invites students to explore generative design not simply as a technique or toolset but as a mindset: one that shifts design away from fixed, static outcomes and toward adaptable systems, meaningful relationships, and forms that can evolve in response to context, input, and interaction.

At the center of the workshop is a timely question: What is the role of designers when creative work is no longer defined only by static outputs? Together, we will approach design as an evolving conversation between ideas, systems, people, technologies, and the world around us. This intensive is designed to open new perspectives on creative work, encourage cross-disciplinary curiosity, and challenge conventional creative habits.
