Design Book Club - Rachel Delphia
On Wednesday, April 22, the School of Design Book Club welcomes Rachel Delphia, Adjunct of Practice in the School of Design, for a discussion centered on Designing Motherhood: Things That Make and Break Our Births, edited by Michelle Millar Fisher and Amber Winick.
Designing Motherhood examines the objects, systems, and technologies that surround pregnancy, birth, and early parenthood—from medical devices and domestic tools to cultural narratives and social infrastructures. Through historical and contemporary examples, the book invites us to consider how design both supports and constrains experiences of motherhood, and whose needs and perspectives have historically been centered—or overlooked.
Rachel will help guide the conversation through themes of care, embodiment, design history, and social equity, opening space to reflect on how design participates in shaping intimate, everyday aspects of life.
As always, the Book Club is informal, generous, and conversation-driven. Whether you’ve engaged deeply with the readings, explored a few chapters, or are simply curious about the ideas, you are warmly encouraged to join us. Bring your lunch, your questions, and your perspective.
