Engagements, Partners, & Sponsors
We aim for transformational partnerships. The Ballay Center’s approach is deeply rooted in collaboration and interdisciplinarity, drawing on a diverse range of expertise to tackle complex challenges. We partner with industry leaders, non-profits, government entities, and units on campus to co-create impactful solutions, and aim to inspire innovation and envision a future where imaginative solutions and ground-breaking ideas intersect, shaping a world that is more sustainable, equitable, and inspiring for generations to come.
Our legacy endowment supports infrastructure and programming, so we are incredibly grateful for donations to the Center for Design Fusion General Fund that enrich our Fusion Fund for design-led transdisciplinary research and practice, and enable us to expand our programming.
Design Fusion x Coulter Welcome Center
The Ballay Center partnered with the Provost's Office at CMU to enhance the welcoming posture for the university. We provided professional education workshops for our collaborators from Enrollment Management, the Student Success Center, University Communications and Marketing, the Coulter Welcome Center, Office of Disabilities Resources, Campus Tours, Admissions, Facilities Management Services, Campus Stores, Campus Design and Facilities Development (CDFD) and more. In the Designathon faculty, staff and students worked together to develop concepts to express the student experience and culture of innovation at CMU which were translated, designed, built and installed in the Welcome Center via a faculty-led summer design-build project working closely with CDFD.
Engagements include:
Sponsored Project Course
Professional Education for collaborators
Designathon for faculty, staff and students

Conversations on the Principles of Life
On February 7, faculty and doctoral students from the School of Design participated in an online systems workshop facilitated by scientist, educator, activist, and author Fritjof Capra and arranged by the Transition Design Institute. Dr. Capra provided four principles of life to guide designing systems: 1. Life organizes itself in networks. 2. Life is inherently regenerative. 3. Life is inherently creative. 4. Life is inherently intelligent. These principles provide a frame to bridge traditional design disciplines with transition design by emphasizing interconnectedness and adaptability in complex systems. Traditional design fields can integrate these principles by fostering regenerative, evolving solutions that respond dynamically to social and ecological challenges, rather than relying on static, linear approaches. This systems-thinking perspective aligns with transition design by promoting long-term, sustainable transformations that support resilience and co-evolution in human and natural environments.
