The Porter Hall Machine Room

What is the 3DLab?

Simply put the 3DLab is a set of dedicated spaces for the School of Design to engage with materials and processes.

It is not a shop or a makerspace, it is a campus Lab.

EH&S training is required for access for all activities other than: spray booth access, picking up 3Dprints, and pickup/drop of laser cut materials.

    • 3DLab has 7 total printers. 5 in PHA27 and 2 in Reese.
    • All uploaded prints files must have a course# In the name  All prints will be charged to student and professor accounts at the end of the year.
    • 3DLab staff are not responsible for slicing student files.
    • Read the 3D Printing Guide.
    • Only trained staff may operate the laser cutter.
    • Work/Study staff are available to perform cuts.  Students must supply their own material.
      24 hour turnaround
    • The spray booth is open to all SOD members. This is a safe place for the use of hazardous chemicals with VOC’s such as spray paint or Super77.  If you are not a 3DLab member please ring the doorbell someone will let you in.
    • Adjacent to the spray booth is a small room for resin and silicone casting. Use of this casting room is by permission of lab staff on a case by case basis and requires EH&S training.
  • Access to the general assembly area requires basic online EH&S training.

    In it you will find:

    • The 3DLab has large reservable bins for storage of material and ongoing projects.
    • They have an internal capacity of 28.7 x 20.8 x 18.8”
    • We have a total of 85 available bins.
    • They are reserved by SOD professors for their students for the length of their projects
    • 3DLab tools must not be stored in bins
  • The 3DLab has many hand tools available for use.  Tools must not leave the 3DLab and must be put back in the same place after use.

  • Additional EH&S training is required for student soldering bench access.

  • The 3DLab has 3 Permanent sewing stations and 3 additional machines in storage.  Students are responsible for providing their own materials. Access is covered under EH&S assembly room training.

    • Machine room tool use requires EH&S training as well as completion of 51-249,51-324/824 for students.
    • Professors must complete EH&S training and may set up 1 on 1 training with lab staff in lieu of 51-249.
    • The machine room has a very limited occupancy limit.  8-12 students depending on activities.
    • The machine room may be reserved for specific courses along with the reservable work tables.
